ODB-II is the result of more than eight years of research and development. It is derived from a research project called Jasmine at Fujitsu Laboratories in Kawasaki, Japan.
The first prototype of Jasmine was made available in 1988, and was designed for users who needed to store information with a complex structure, often multimedia in form, and were limited by the inflexible tabular data structures of relational systems. The research proved successful, and a beta product called NOAH was released to about twenty selected users in 1991. These users have developed a wide range of innovative applications, and their feedback has been incorporated into the first full product version of ODB-II, released in February 1994.
